Assignment 1: Publication Outline

What is the topic of your article?

The article introduces the Hybrid Artifact-Based Learning (HABL) Framework, which is an instructional model that eschews the traditional vs digital argument and instead combines physical texts, handwritten learning artifacts, digital artifacts, digital assessments, and reflective practices to improve student retention of information and metacognitive awareness (which is just the kids awareness of their own learning) and increase performance on certification exams and improve job readiness. The article argues that meaningful learning occurs when students actively create, revise, and reflect on artifacts across both physical and digital environments, rather than simply consuming information through technology or ignoring it completely. The AI revolution is here, smartphones are going nowhere, but the value of traditional education cannot be ignored any longer. There must be active progress in merging the approaches to best serve our community of learners.

Primary Target: The Clearing House: A Journal of Educational Strategies, Issues and Ideas

This journal is an excellent fit because I’d like to write an article that creates a practical instructional framework that can be implemented across secondary classrooms and Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs, and that is not quite so bogged down in proving itself with parallel research. Also, the audience and requirements are agreeable and relevant. 

TechTrends

TechTrends would be another good choice because it focuses on educational technology integration, and I’m showcasing a different conceptual framework for combining traditional and digital learning experiences that some may not have seen or that have not been codified in this way. Submission to this publication would entail a massive amount of research and would balloon the article to the size of a dissertation.

Journal of Technology and Teacher Education

This journal somewhat alignes with my focus on instructional design, teacher practice, and how technology is integrated in the modern classroom and would meet my needs for the purposes of this assignment.

What is the connection to your innovation plan or initiative?

The article directly supports my innovation initiative to improve student retention, critical thinking, technical proficiency, and metacognitive awareness through the intentional integration of traditional and digital learning practices. My school district has moved to an accelerated, 5x5 schedule, and it will destroy any meaningful learning in almost every class. My work has increasingly centered on concerns that students often complete digital assignments successfully yet struggle to retain information, transfer knowledge, or explain how they learned, a problem that will be exacerbated by the fact that they now have to complete an entire class in a single semester.

The framework provides a research-based model that combines physical artifacts (handwritten note-making and physical learning artifacts) with digital artifacts (including digital assessments and reflective practices) to strengthen learning (encoding, retention, and learner awareness).

It is my belief that educational technology needs to be rebalanced with cognitive science principles and promote student ownership of learning. I hope that through artifact creation and a careful cycle of reflection, adjudication, and authentic and formative assessment, this can be achieved.

How can this information help others?

The framework in my article provides educators with a practical, easily implementable model for designing lessons and PBL opportunities that move beyond the traditional debate over paper-versus-screen learning that is resurfacing worldwide. Teachers can use the framework to intentionally connect reading, writing, artifact creation, technology integration, feedback, and reflection within a single instructional cycle, with minimal changes to their current processes and without sacrificing the convenience of their LMSs. There is also a minimum amount of time spent creating documents, and couples AI like Magic School with the teacher's intention to create many of the necessary documents for the framework.

The framework is specifically aimed at:

  • Secondary classroom teachers

  • Career and Technical Education instructors

  • Instructional coaches

  • School leaders

  • Curriculum designers

The article provides a theoretical rationale, research support, and practical implementation strategies that educators can adapt across content areas and grade levels, even in an accelerated classroom with more seat time per day but less per academic year. This also allows teachers to create TEKS-aligned lessons that include scaffolding, spiraling, and differentiation. 

Lessons Learned or Hoped to Learn

In preparing to write this article, I have learned that many educational theories that appear unrelated actually share a common emphasis on the importance of artifact creation and knowledge construction. As a certified English Teacher and AV teacher, I realized that the development of the HABL framework is a natural synthesis of these theories that people use but don’t codify, such as Action Research. If we are to serve the students of today, we can no longer just talk about yesterday, or guess about tomorrow, but we have to work where we are and with what we have- analog and digital. 

I hope to learn whether combining both physical and digital artifacts can help students retain and recall more information and increase metacognitive awareness more effectively than either physical or digital learning environments can alone. I also hope to contribute to the ongoing conversation about educational technology and it integration in an era dominated by artificial intelligence and a clear overreliance on digital learning tools.

The article will include several digital resources designed to support understanding and implementation of the HABL framework:

A visual representation of the HABL learning cycle that has been synthesized from my AV class, showing the progression from physical texts to handwritten artifacts, digital artifacts, feedback systems, reflection, and learning outcomes. It will also include a template for AI-created text entries, an example of a student notebook (I ask every student to get a composition notebook as part of essential class materials), and a format for a Digital BlueBook that students will use for assessments. 

Implementation Planning Table

An AI-generated, teacher-friendly planning tool that connects various types of artifacts students can create with cognitive functions in relation to the encoding and retrieval of information, and various instructional activities across disciplines.

I hope to include links to lesson-planning templates, AI websites, review templates, exit tickets, and free artifact-design tools for PBL assignments that teachers can use in their classrooms immediately.

Audience, Digital Presence, and Intended Message

My primary audience is secondary teachers, CTE educators, instructional coaches, educational technology specialists, and school leaders who have witnessed that “technology-rich,” one-to-one classroom environments alone do not and have not improved student outcomes, and that traditional education does not fully or effectively address the evolving landscape of our digital world.

The article will work to maintain a strong digital presence through visual models, downloadable implementation resources, and examples housed on the e-portfolio I have created for this class. I hope to ensure that these resources are shareable through professional education networks, educational blogs, and social media platforms.

The central message of the article is simply that effective learning is not determined by whether instruction is physical or digital, nor is it hampered by either. Rather, learning is strengthened when students actively create, revise, and reflect on meaningful artifacts they produce and evaluate across both learning environments. By intentionally integrating physical texts, handwritten learning artifacts, digital artifacts, digital media, social media, and reflective practices, educators can create effective learning ecosystems that actually promote retention, visible thinking, and a student’s awareness of their own learning, while teaching them how to integrate digital systems, navigate technology responsibly, use AI with intent and accountability, and realize that the page is as important as the screen and that they support each other in ways that are beneficial for them.
